From the desk of Pastor Jim Ellis…

What is happening with our 4-church merger discussions?  One important development is hiring Mark Siebert of the McKnight Group church consultants to help us design facilities or a facility for United Methodist ministry in Bucyrus.  Mark has toured all existing churches and looked at alternative building sites.  Mark will present options and costs to us in the near future.  The process includes looking at goals and target groups to be reached for Christ.  Some of the people we feel called to target are families with younger children, aging baby boomers, and middle-class people.  We also want to be in mission to the poor and latch-key children.

Mark has been informed that our district superintendent wants 2 United Methodist churches in Bucyrus.  One big church is still a possibility, but unlikely.  Mark will present both a single church and a 2-church option.

Costs are a concern.  Mark is looking at all of our finances to see what we can afford.  Any new building program would cost considerable money.  A completely new church building on a new site would cost well over a million dollars.  While not committing to an exact cost, my impression is the 2-4 million dollar range could be likely.

We have offered Woodlawn as a potential site for a brand-new merged congregation but there does not seem to be much enthusiasm for this idea among the other churches.

Administrative Board News from Linda Efaw

We have just celebrated the most Joyous Holiday of the year.  I trust your Easter was filled with blessings.  I saw this article recently and wanted to share it with everyone at Woodlawn.  I don’t know the author, but I think there is good “food for thought” here.  I hope we all have the opportunity to share “Joy” with others each day.

21 Keys to a Happy Life – A Journey to Joy:

1.  Compliment three people every day.

2.  Watch a sunrise.

3.  Be the first to say “Hello.”

4.  Live beneath your means.

5.  Treat everyone as you want to be treated.

6.  Never give up on anybody, miracles happen.

7.  Forget the Jones’.

8.  Remember someone’s name.

9.  Pray not for things, but for wisdom and courage.

10.  Be kinder than you have to be.

11.  Be tough-minded, but tender-hearted.

12.  Don’t forget that a person’s greatest emotional need is to feel appreciated.

13.  Keep your promises.

14.  Show cheerfulness even when you don’t feel it.

15.  Remember that overnight success usually takes 15 years.

16.  Leave everything better than you found it.

17.  Remember that winners do what losers don’t want to do.

18.  When you arrive at your job in the morning, let the first thing you say

       brighten everyone’s day.

19.  Don’t rain on other people’s parades.

20.  Don’t waste the opportunity to tell someone you love them.

21.  Keep some things to yourself and don’t promote havoc by hurting people

       you love.

With a joyful heart,

Linda Efaw, Chairman, Administrative Council

News from United Methodist Women…

I hope everyone had a blessed Easter.  The services at Woodlawn were awesome.  The Maundy Thursday evening passion play was especially touching.

The All Daughter’s Banquet is Sunday, May 2, at 5pm.  The men will be serving dinner.  All daughters are invited.  The program is by Mrs. Smith who has many puppets.  Some of us saw her program, and it is very good.  The younger daughters are encouraged to bring a puppet if they have one.

Don’t forget Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 9.

The June meetings are:  Esther Circle on Tuesday, June 8, at 6pm at

Daily Scoop and returning to Woodlawn for our meeting.

The Rebekah Circle will meet on Wednesday, June 16, at 9am at Woodlawn.  Anyone is welcome at our meetings.

Remember Father’s Day on Sunday, June 20.

Enjoy the good weather, and be sure to give thanks to God for all our blessings.

News from Couples Plus…

Couples Plus friend in Mauritania, Africa:  Lalla Mint Sinny.

We have been supporting Lalla since 2006.  Last year we sent an extra $75 to her and she purchased clothing, school supplies, and a goat!  Her family can use the goat for milking.  Her country is very dry.  She attends school and is getting Christian Education, too.  She receives medical check ups and is in good health.

Please see her picture with her goat and one of her sisters.  If anyone would like to help us with a donation for her and her family, please see Dixie Striker.
